Phrases and idioms shire-horse a heavy powerful type of draught-horse bred chiefly in the midland counties of England. Etymology: OE scir, OHG scira care, official charge: orig. unkn. SHIRE suffix forming the names of counties (Derbyshire; Hampshire).
